Robert Zandvliet

As far as I’m concerned painting is about three things: 1 paint, 2 the image, 3 spirit. Spirit is the soul of the piece, the added value that eludes immediate observation.

The paintings of Robert Zandvliet (1970, the Netherlands) straddle the divide between the abstract and the figurative. When starting out, Zandvliet would paint mundane objects, simplifying and greatly magnifying them, but since the late nineties he has drawn inspiration from figurative art and nature. While his emphasis used to be on form and line, his landscapes now revolve around the fluency of his brush and the rhythm of his touch. What he is concerned with is light, space and slowness. More than that, what interests Zandvliet is the power of paint on canvas to enrapture us.
