Beyond These Walls 2
Beyond These Walls II is the successor to the first Beyond These Walls exhibition and builds further on the theme of connection and shared stories. Three-quarters of the artworks are new. The exhibition invites visitors to discover the boundless possibilities of shared narratives, where walls transform into windows to new perspectives.
Visitors are welcomed into an intimate living room, where works from the collection are brought together like a family. In the salon hang new small works, including paintings by Heidrun Rathgeb, who captures insights and vistas in a grand manner, alongside Sabrina Rosenheim’s small intimate portraits. By the coffee bar we look ahead to ReflACTION, our anniversary exhibition this fall. On the blue wall, a festive preview: dancing couples, monumental stiletto heels and yellow balloons inviting you to look back on 30 years of art collecting!
Yellow walls weave their way like a thread through the exhibition. In a corridor, paintings by Esiri Erheriene-Essi and Bo Zhang reveal domestic scenes: a family portrait and an unguarded moment. In addition, we see work by Ana Navas and Berend Strik, who both explore how textiles and clothing function as a veil that simultaneously conceals and reveals our view of identity, history and perception. In Navas’ work, this is translated into glass, while Strik literally weaves it into the canvas.
In a private room, Markus Weggenmann pushes the boundaries of painting with abstract planes of color in car paint, a material not unfamiliar to AkzoNobel, from which figures and architecture slowly emerge. Florence di Benedetto’s photographs show still lifes in domestic settings, zooming in on imperfections, celebrating history and symbolism. Udona Boerema paints fictional landscapes as well as still lifes, full of transience that simultaneously seem boundless. Both artists transform the everyday and the mystical into universal stories.
Beyond These Walls II celebrates connection - an exhibition that shows how art brings people together across all boundaries.
