Beyond These Walls

“Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.”
Robert Genn

Beyond These Walls invites viewers to discover the boundless possibilities of shared stories, where walls are transformed into windows onto new perspectives.

The central architectural axis forms the beating heart of the exhibition. Here artists transform façades into openings that invite exploration. The exhibition unfolds into various ‘rooms’, which together form a single narrative about connection and shared experiences.

The visitor is welcomed into a cosy living room, in which works from the collection are grouped together as a family. Small paintings encircle an embroidery-covered desk with everyday objects, which together speak the universal language of domestic warmth. By the coffee bar, domestic interiors create a natural flow between indoor and outdoor world. Three generations and nationalities hang side by side; young talent Hettie Inniss (1999, UK), Adrian Schiess (1959, CH) and Lara de Moor (1969, NL).

Like a thread the yellow line weaves a ribbon of human presence through the exhibition, connecting all the spaces with each other. In a corner delicate drawings and ceramics by Odonchimeg Davaadorj (1990, MN) and a wall hanging by Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien (1990, FR/GP/CI) reveal how being ‘at home’ knows no boundaries in our closely interwoven world.

In the back, three presentations form a bridge between cultures and continents. In the film installation by Jiyan Düyü (1995, NL) we share the delight of children at play on a rugged Kurdish mountain ridge. In the photo-installation by Michelle Piergoelam (1997, NL) a shaman leads us through a Surinamese jungle where plantations once stood, and Arjan van Helmond (1971, NL) transports us to the garden of his Lebanese parents-in-law. These works show how personal stories become universal experiences, as soon as we open up to each other.

Beyond These Walls is a celebration of connection – an exhibition that shows how art can transcend borders to bring people together. At a time when walls are being built, this exhibition shows the infinite possibilities of shared stories and open doors.
