Maria Roosen

Because the world is bad enough as it is. Because sometimes things may not be as bad as they seem. Softness can be as meaningful as what is pointed or jagged. Love is a powerful force and as true as aggression and destruction.
Maria Roosen via De Volkskrant, 1999

Maria Roosen’s (1957, the Netherlands) sculptures seem to be steeped in softness. According to Roosen, glass is energy solidified, coinciding with her subjects: fertility and vivacity. Roosen’s oeuvre consists of, among other things, glass breasts, sausage-like shapes and milk jugs. Her sculptures are always filled with positivity, acting as a counterweight to the harshness of a world ruled by facts and efficiency.
