Sebastiaan Bremer

I think photographic images carry a lot with them, and to me photographs, especially on paper, have a talismanic power.

Sebastiaan Bremer (1970, Netherlands) transforms photographs, often personal snapshots, into intricate, layered works exploring time, memory, and meaning. He began by meticulously painting recreated photos, later working directly on them with delicate dots, lines, paint, and ink to alter perception and emotion. Over time, he expanded his methods by etching into photo surfaces and incorporating collage.

Inspired by classical art, modern photography, and botanical prints, Bremer also creates large installations using video, sound, sculpture, and found objects, pushing beyond two-dimensional formats. In recent projects, he experiments with blank glossy archival paper, creating images without traditional photography. Throughout his practice, Bremer invites reflection on how memories are constructed and how images can hold layers of emotion, history, and imagination.
