Lawrence Weiner

My use of language is not in any way designed and it never has been. I think that I’m really just a materialist.

Lawrence Weiner's (1942-2021, United States) work was essential to the development of conceptual art in the 60s. It consists of language and the materials to which language refers, using language itself as a sculptural entity. He became famous for his Statement of Intent, which states that an art work may be reproduced (as a piece of music may be played by different musicians) but doesn’t necessarily need to be executed. The (written) concept of the work is the work itself. Weiner often provides little explanation for his work, which is considered by many to be difficult to understand. Weiner aims for questions to develop when his work is viewed, causing it to change with every new interpretation.
