Marjolein Rothman

In the painting I am always looking for ways of leaving out as much as I can. Sometimes I am afraid there will be nothing left, that I will be left with the white canvas.
Marjolein Rothman in The Gaze (2012), a catalogue text by Lotte Möller

The work of Marjolein Rothman (1974, Netherlands) explores the nature of perception. Her paintings on aluminum or canvas are often based on photographs and consist of quick brush strokes that are added and erased several times, in search of the essence of the depicted. The result is a representation of reality with a fleeting character. Rothmans early work focused on fragmented, sober versions of iconic architecture and family photographs. Her attention has recently shifted to the minimalist representation of flowers and botanicals, often in bright colors.
