WONNE

My work is created the same way nightmares and dreams are created.

WONNE (1996, the Netherlands) creates work in search of spontaneity and openness, allowing images and ideas to emerge from the imagination without a fixed outcome in mind. By adopting the visual language of a child, he bypasses the reserve and self-consciousness that often accompany adulthood. Although his work is rooted in personal experiences, broader themes that resonate in contemporary society are never far away. Questions of visibility, vulnerability, strength, and belonging run throughout his practice.

Working across ceramics, drawing, painting, and digital collage, WONNE creates expressive and colorful works that vary greatly in scale, from intimate drawings that invite close attention to life-sized sculptures. A recurring motif in his work is the Lightning Catcher: a sculptural figure that imagines attracting the power of lightning. For WONNE, lightning represents a force that is both empowering and destructive. Through these works, he explores the desire to gather strength and confidence, while reflecting on the risks and responsibilities that come with being seen.
