Marthe Wéry
All my work consists of an elementary attempt to experience the surface. Elementary, meaning a pursuit conducted from the intrinsic.” In its most basic structure, a line is surface.

Marthe Wéry's (1930-2005, Belgium) work consists of one long study of the fundamentals of painting as an art: the attributes of the material and the medium. Wéry pursues the essence of form, using formal basic principles such as proportion, size, tone and texture as a guide. A painting by Wéry can never be understood when viewed in isolation, but only within the context of the many other works she created.
