In my photography, I always seek for the imagination evoked by stories. Despite my Surinamese background, I knew nothing about that culture. The fact that there is a truth hidden in a lot of cultural stories like fairy tales and myths, is what triggers my passion for them.

Michelle Piergoelam (1997, Netherlands) is an art photographer who creates visual stories based on cultural myths, dreams and memories. Images where cultural traditions, stories and scenery are intertwined. She makes conscious use of indigenous stories in order to emphasize their cultural significance and as testimony to neglected culture and history. Her work stimulates the imagination and keeps the traditional culture of storytelling alive.
