Jonathan Wateridge
To me, the best marks and most successful paintings are the ones where, what's on the canvas is only there because it’s necessary

The human in isolation is the main theme in Jonathan Wateridge's (1972, Zambia) paintings. His figures appear ghostlike, charged with feelings of disturbance and uncertainty. They become entangled in their surroundings; bodies are flattened or take on an almost sculptural form. The existential solitude that emanates from his figures raises questions about how we can relate to the world around us.
