Figure in a Garden, 2024

A woman looks inquiringly at the viewer over her shoulder. Her dress and figure are illuminated in the spring sun, yet behind her, darkness is crawling into the painting. Jonathan Wateridge (1972, Zambia) depicts her in a state of flux, somewhere between appearing and disappearing, as if trapped in a disturbing dream. The undefined nature of the space in which she finds herself contributes to the scene’s ominous atmosphere.
