Johan Tahon

When we show, in our fragility, our humanity to another, a deeply human exchange comes to be. My work is mostly about this kind of interpersonal communication. The image, the object – however lacking it may be – is the mediator in-between the people.

Johan Tahon’s (1965, Belgium) work appears to be an ode to uncertainty; uncertainty, not as a weakness, but as an act of contemplation, a kind of searching, meaningful in and of itself, manifesting itself both in his sculptures and in his working process. He works alone and in silence, molding the materials with his hands, pouring glazing over unstirring figures whose eyes gaze at something other than the exterior being. We know these images from books, sculptures, paintings and rituals because the same question has been asked for thousands of years, and the very act of posing the question contains beauty.
