Imi Knoebel

. . . To bring things to a point of lightness. That's the most difficult place to get to with painting. The work that went into it shouldn't show. Beauty always lies in between.
Imi Knoebel via Journey of Contemporary Art, 1993/1994

Painter, sculptor and photographer Imi Knoebel (1940, Germany) is an influential artist who studied under Joseph Beuys in the 1960s. He developed his own geometric abstract imagery, inspired both by American Minimal Art and by the work of the Russian master, Kazimir Malevich. Although Knoebel's artistic principles have remained unaltered over the years, they have given rise to great visual variation in diverse media, executed in a playful visual language with color at its heart.
