Mia Chaplin

My work is autobiographical and that seems to emerge as nostalgia. The colour palette is evocative of flesh and femininity and a feeling of warmth and safety. But there are also warnings of danger, betrayal and a need for protection.
Mia Chaplin via Between 10and5, 2016

Working in oil paint on canvas and paper, Mia Chaplin’s (1990, South Africa) highly expressive works are characterized by their rich impasto surfaces and visible brushstrokes. Consisting of still lifes, figure studies and landscapes, her work seems to meditate on the familiar. Her loose, erratic style of painting—synonymous with that of the impressionists—is intuitive, heightening the emotionality of her pieces. They communicate a sense of estrangement; reflecting a detachment between the self and her surroundings. Her works sway between voyeurism and intimate interaction, while remaining consistently self-referential.
