Hinke Schreuders

Growing up in the seventies and eighties, I have absorbed aspects of the past and the present and this has tended to lead to inner conflicts and confusion such as how to behave and what to be as a woman. These conflicts form the core of my work.

The embroideries by Hinke Schreuders (1969, the Netherlands) are highly personal works of art. The men and women living inside them often relate to her life. The tenderness of the thread and fabric correspond to her emotions. Schreuders embroideries are small, poetic and quiet, and are often based on photographs, not seldom of her youth. Schreuders does not only apply form to the fabric, but also removes parts to create negative forms, while felt is used to create echoes of certain forms.
