Henk Fakkeldij

Henk Fakkeldij (1958, Netherlands) creates artworks that bring together image, music, and storytelling. Central to his practice are graphic scores: visual compositions made up of lines, shapes, colours, and symbols that can be interpreted as musical performances. Rather than prescribing exact notes or rhythms, these works offer performers freedom to respond, making each performance unique. At the same time, the compositions stand on their own as visual artworks, balancing abstraction and figuration to communicate rhythm, emotion, and movement.

Working across drawing, painting, sculpture, music, performance, sound, and writing, Fakkeldij chooses the medium that best serves each idea. Improvisation plays an important role in his process, allowing images, sounds, and stories to develop alongside one another. Through this trans-medial approach, he explores how visual art and music can enrich one another and create new ways of experiencing a story.
