Erik Mattijssen

The way I compose is probably close to the way one creates a collage: making use of elements from different sources, different origins that I bring together in a new arrangement. I do this in such a way that I can tell a story that had not been told before or let a new light shine on things often seen.

Erik Mattijssen’s (1957, the Netherlands) drawings function as a complex collage of stories. Vibrating with suggestions and color, everyday objects are gathered in a scene that, as a whole, seems to lie just outside of reality. A shadow might be missing, some colors are a tad too intense, as if the residues of a life, or many lives, have accumulated in a room of the mind. Undoubtedly, much has happened in this room, and much will happen still.
