Anders Davidsen

Through layers of oil paint and memories of fishing in Jutland, northern Denmark, Anders Davidsen (1987, Denmark) captures the shifting beauty of light and water. Davidsen spent his summers there at his grandparents’ house; a place with vast vistas where time does not seem to exist. His seascapes recreate the subtle changes of atmosphere, like sunlight sparkling across the sea or fog rolling in on a winter’s morning. Each painting feels like a quiet moment suspended in time, reflecting the rhythms of nature and memory.

On a warm, earth-brown gesso, Davidsen applies thin, dry layers of oil paint. The layers are pressed forcefully into the tinted chalk gesso, after which the paint, while slowly drying, is scrubbed and swept into the surface to create reflections on a water surface. Davidsen ensures he doesn’t overwork his paintings, so that the colored layers dance lightly on the canvas, like the ebb and flow of the rolling tide.
