Alan Uglow
I think ideas are actions, declarations of intent—an installation becomes an action; it's personal, independent, and may be seen as subject matter.
Alan Uglow
Alan Uglow (1941-2011, United Kingdom) works in the tradition of Piet Mondriaan and Barnett Newman. Every piece has its own harmonious composition, resulting from lines cutting across the surface, generating new spaces as they go. Every monochrome space is painted with a different brush or roller, all the while varying the direction of his brush strokes, leading to subtle nuances in how light is reflected. Uglow’s experience of the world – what he sees, touches and tastes – inspires him; the layout of a wanted ad, a news headline, a sound, and it’s this reality he transposes into shape and proportion. Working with great precision there is no coincidence in Uglow’s paintings. Everything is deliberate.
