Mediterraneo #1, 2023

Mediterraneo recounts the modern migratory flows crossing the Mediterranean Sea. The images depict the waters of southern Sicily, which have been affected by numerous landings in recent years. The sea was only photographed on days when the sirocco wind was blowing. This particular wind comes from the south-east, the same route travelled by the migrants, it is also warm and laden with sand and gives an ethereal and rarefied colour to the air and water. On each photograph the artist has inserted a material element, placed perfectly in the centre of the image to divide the horizon. This element is a fragment of the thermal blankets used as first aid for immigrants arriving alive on the shores. Gold contrasting with the black of the sacks used for those who did not make it. The project takes a look at contemporaneity, a poetic interpretation with a strong aesthetic connotation that translates the complex and dramatic social and political situation into a symbolic key.
