Yutaka Sone
I love more than anything else the moment when I carve into the material. When I carve away one centimeter, three centimeters, five centimeters, ten centimeters—the millennia and eons over which that stone came into being become visible in the form that I give it. Then the time represented by the work’s subject matter, the time distilled by the stone and my own personal time in that space all begin to overlap in a way that is almost meditative.

Yutaka Sone (1965, Japan) is a multifaceted artist using varied materials and techniques to produce his sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs, videos and performances. A consistent theme in Sone’s oeuvre is his fascination for natural and architectural landscapes. He seeks out his subjects in real-life locations, whether on Hong Kong Island or a Los Angeles freeway, a mountain range, a rainforest or his own back garden. He recreates these scenes, in miniature, in various materials such as paint, marble and crystal, or using organic materials like plants and soil.
