Marike Schuurman

Marike Schuurman (1964, Netherlands) works with photography to explore human-made spaces and landscapes. Her images often start from situations she observes in specific places, focusing on unusual or sometimes absurd ways in which people try to shape or control their surroundings. While her work has a documentary starting point, the photographs move beyond simple observation and invite a more open way of looking.

For each project she uses a distinct photographic approach, paying close attention to both the subject and the process of making the image. Her work encourages viewers to reflect on what they see in a photograph and how images shape our understanding of the world.
