Tyna Adebowale

Women have to constantly fight, to achieve and attain what is normal to men. Why so? Are we just supposed to follow these stringent laws and not ask questions?
Adebowale in an interview with Kó gallery, Nigeria

Political, historical and personal issues are the common thread through the work of Tyna Adebowale (Nigeria, 1982). In her installations, drawings and videos, she pleads for the visibility of the queer community in her own environment and that of her home country Nigeria. The role of colonialism in this absence is criticized by the artist. Women and queer people held a valued place in Nigeria before the colonial era. The influence of the imperialists changed this fundamentally. Adebowale depicts this inequality in recognizable detailed shapes and lines.
