Susan Hiller
It’s interesting that the subject dissolves in a cloud of colored light.

Susan Hiller (1940-2019, United States) started out as an anthropologist, only to move to London in the early seventies to set up as an artist. Her work is strongly influenced by her anthropological training, as well as by minimalist aesthetics and surrealist sensibilities, as she herself puts it. In her work, Hiller draws upon everyday things and happenings in society. She finds inspiration in such sources as postcards, dreams, horror films and archives. By making collections of these objects, categorising them and presenting them, Hiller magically transforms them into works of art offering access to themes that have to do with memory, identity, the ways meaning is acknowledged, the supernatural, and the mystical.
