Ruri Matsumoto

Using string, Ruri Matsumoto (1981, Japan) reduces three-dimensional spaces to lines, eventually translating its entirety into a painted canvas. With each layer the composition becomes more complex. Lines are vertically ordered and straightened with masking tape. Underneath the tape paints may blend with one another, while the act of removing the tape will sometimes cause fragments of paints to break off. The result is a painting that, at first glance, appears to be constructed with strong lines, but on closer inspection presents a landscape of lines both sensitive and unpredictable.
