Philipp Gufler
I always try to focus on people, either who are not in the focus or... I’m able to find a new angle.
Philipp Gufler (1989, Germany) creates work that brings together art, activism, and historical research. His practice focuses on queer histories, identities, and communities, examining how these have been represented, omitted, or marginalized within dominant historical narratives. Drawing on archival material, literature, popular culture, and conversations with artists, activists, and scholars, Gufler explores how the past continues to shape contemporary discussions around gender, sexuality, and social inclusion.
Working across silkscreen prints, mirrors, textiles, artist books, video, and performance, Gufler pays close attention to the relationship between material and meaning. In his mirror works, each color is mixed by hand and applied layer by layer through silkscreen printing. As the layers accumulate, reflections gradually fade and the viewer’s image becomes partially obscured. By combining self-reflection with references to Minimalism and queer history, Gufler creates works that encourage viewers to consider their own position within broader social and historical frameworks.
