Meschac Gaba

For me, this is a way of demonstrating the right way that African Art should be approached. It’s a way of enunciating how multicultural a continent Africa has become, and that we need to take account of that. If this project pulls off, African Art will be brought to a level standing with other idioms of art.
Meschac Gaba

Meschac Gaba (1961, Benin) explores in his art the interaction between people and cultures. In doing so, he emphasizes the unbalanced role of the West in relation to Africa. His art sheds light on the unequal economic distribution in the world and the influence of capitalist neocolonial structures. For example, in one of his works he combines African currencies of little value with Western banknotes from the paper shredder of the Dutch Bank.
