Marc Mulders
“I paint on the threshold of light”
Marc Mulders (1958, Netherlands) is a painter whose work is inspired by gardens, flowers, and the changing effects of light. His paintings are rich in color yet gentle in tone, often balancing between recognizable forms and abstraction. Early in his career, his work was darker and included religious scenes and still lifes, influenced by painters such as Chaïm Soutine. A turning point came in 2008, when he moved from the city to a farmhouse surrounded by gardens and flower fields. Since then, nature has become the central subject of his work, and his palette has grown lighter and more luminous. Mulders paints directly from observation, often working in daylight at the edge of his studio, where inside and outside meet. Alongside painting, he has worked extensively with stained glass, creating major windows for churches in the Netherlands. His practice reflects a deep interest in craftsmanship, tradition, and the spiritual power of nature.
