Machteld Rullens
The cardboard box is something that keeps coming back to me, whether I like it or not. It continues to intrigue me: the decisions that are made. It is flat, it rises into space, it has its own character. I basically just follow those traits as I work.
Shortdocu about Machteld Rullens Coda Museum 2022
In the work of Machteld Rullens (The Hague, 1988) beauty and absurdity of the ordinary are the subject. Seemingly ordinary materials play the key role in her installations, videos and performances. Thereby, Rullens' mood during the creative process is fundamental to the final work. Because, from her perspective, that mood reflects the time and contemporary world that, despite all its beauty, is overstimulated and possibly even bored. Recently, Rullens has been working a lot with cardboard boxes, which she paints, blurring the dividing line between painting and sculpture.
