Lieven Hendriks

I wanted to create a world by erasing it.
Lieven Hendriks, Mister Motley, 2011

Lieven Hendriks (1970, the Netherlands) takes everyday objects as starting point for his work: nails in a wall, shapes that seem to have been cut out of paper or finger marks on a misted window. Through the use of trompe l’oeil effects, or by depicting a landscape in minimal brushstrokes, Hendriks plays with our perception. He employs his technical virtuosity to make the observer reflect on our habitual way of looking. Although the images seem as clear as day, they always possess an ambiguity that invites us to look closer..
