Koen Vermeule

I catch our fleeting, everyday reality and, for a moment, hold on to it. I want to reveal the mystery of the trivial and everyday.

Koen Vermeule (1965, the Netherlands) is a painter who always has a camera with him. His work begins with a glance, at the street through a window, or on a country road, capturing it with his camera. Using these photographs as his source material, he creates paintings in which landscapes and abstract human figures are predominant. Vermeule paints a single moment at rest. You can wander endlessly in Vermeule’s landscapes while your own associations can roam free. The emptiness in the canvases repels you or attracts you, but driving through the deserted landscape, Vermeule’s perspective paintings loom up again and again.
