Marijke van Warmerdam
For me, repetition is mainly about the sense of beginning — that when things begin, anything is still possible. To me, that’s its essence. There’s something very optimistic about that.

Marijke van Warmerdam (1959, the Netherlands) makes films, photographs and installations. Van Warmerdam gained recognition for her short looping films of everyday events. By decontextualizing the acts they change their meaning. However, it’s not just about those endlessly repeating acts, but rather about becoming hypnotized, about returning to the essence of all the everyday. It’s all about the image which can subsequently cause new and unfamiliar images to present themselves to the viewer’s mind. She applies the same underlying principle in her photography.
