Jonat Deelstra

I need the supernatural. I need to know the mystery of human existence.

The multidisciplinary artist Jonat Deelstra (1991, Netherlands) lives and works in Amsterdam. Although he mainly works as a painter, he also enjoys using new materials. He builds installations, makes drawings, woodcuts, ceramics and animations. His paintings have magically realistic features, alienated, as if something ominous is about to happen.

His series often consist of a mix of different disciplines. The 2021 Funeral Home to the North Sea series provides a futuristic and imaginative look at the burial of human remains. Deelstra proposes to place cemetery structures in the North Sea on which coral and anemones can settle: “Due to an increasingly warmer climate, an enormous amount of coral can grow in the North Sea over the next hundred years. But because the sea has literally been fished bare, these organisms cannot yet settle. By placing structures in the sea, we can ensure rebirth.”
