Merina Beekman

Again and again searching for exactly the right line, the completely successful spot. Day in day out the almost obsessive search for optimum intensity in image and meaning. And then you have the drawing; A kind of laconic hit, loosely spotted intensity or wall-filling miniatures. It worked.
Merina Beekman

Merina Beekman (1961-2009, the Netherlands) is known for her large black and white drawings with Indian Ink on paper. Her art is a result of her travelling experiences through Middle Eastern cultures. Islamic motifs and patterns appear frequently in her drawings, trying as she said to mislead the Evil Eye. Though fascinated by these colourful Eastern cultures she never used color, to create distance towards her subject and make the works more abstract. In the last years she also used embroidery in her drawings. Characteristic of Beekman's work is the multitude of cultures and the visual richness that they represent.
