Johan Nobell

The paintings by Johan Nobell (1963, Sweden) are at once fragile and majestic. Painting mostly landscapes, Nobell is interested in man’s relationship with the landscape, as well as the tension between abstraction and figuration. In this painting, which at first glance reads like a landscape, abstraction challenges figuration in a riotous mash-up where a common shape on the horizon consists of an abstract conflagration.

Nobell is considered one of Scandinavia’s best painters. Balancing out the more traditional styles of painting, he has developed a visual language very much his own.
