Hillebrand van Kampen

The paintings of the self-taught Hillebrand van Kampen (1945, the Netherlands) grow from countless layers of stacked paint. The result is a surface with the tactile variability of weathered stone and textile. His subject—classical subjects such as flowers, nudes, still lifes , rural landscapes and interiors—emerge from matter as a fragmented body, as if reality was turned inside out to show us the raw materials with which it was made, but in the play of light and color an ode to beauty manifests.
