Theo Schepens

It’s a remarkable idea, but anyone residing in a space reacts to it and allows themselves to be propelled by it.
Theo Schepens via Noordhollands Dagblad, 1998

Theo Schepens’ (1961, the Netherlands) sculptures diminish their own sculptural character. They appear direct; the space they take up is minimal. The artist wants to prevent the viewer from being overwhelmed by virulent rhetoric. What they intend is to prompt a thought in us: “I also want that.” These sculptures confer a mode of movement through a landscape, a way to relate to the earth and the sky.
