Hans Hoesktra
Color is definitely important to me.
Hans Hoekstra (1983, Netherlands) is known for his contemplative portraits, but during the pandemic he shifted his focus to still life and the quiet presence of plants as a substitute for human interaction. His series of houseplants, under the title Companionship, captures the intimacy of these new companions. The strong contrasts, manipulating light and color to the extreme, create a vivid tension between brightness and shadow.
Hoekstra's focus is on the mundane, the inconspicuous and the unnoticed - a plant on a windowsill, a street with cyclists, a backyard, the roofs of surrounding houses or an intimate portrait of man in his home environment. By making each of them his subject, Hoekstra removes these fleeting moments from obscurity and gives them a hushed, enduring presence.
