Guo Wei

For a long time, I have focused on the theme of human emotions. For one person to truly understand another is like two flying bullets meeting in midair. The probability is very low. I want to capture this alienation and present it through my own perspective.

In his work Guo Wei (1960, China) focuses on the personal development of the Chinese people – the isolation of the individual in and by the communist system being an especially important theme. Wei employs realistically painted youths and children as a metaphor for the transformation of Chinese society, to show the growing pains which accompany China's slow opening to the West. "People often ask me why I paint children.” Wei says, “For me, they are the models for my concept. The children are actually actors [...]. They are playing adults and children at the same time: they show both the good and the bad." The resulting, provocative paintings portray with originality the individual’s alienation from society.
