Edwin Zwakman

With cardboard, adhesive tape, toys and a brush I reconstruct the world as I see it.

The photos of Edwin Zwakman (1969, the Netherlands) resemble traditional documentary photos, but they are completely set in scene. Zwakman does not photograph reality but makes scale models of reality which he photographs. With minimal resources, he creates an "almost real" world; plastic film for water surfaces, matches for people. In large print, he shows houses under construction or views along the coast, often with classical perspectives and views. We believe that photos don’t lie and because of that we immediately recognize reality in Zwakman’s work. Zwakman does not strive for absolute illusion: if you look closely, you will see the "true nature" of his photos.
