Grenville Davey
I’m not interested in perfection
Grenville Davey 1994, cited in Sculpture Magazine, 2024
Grenville Davey (1961–2022, UK) was a sculptor known for his playful approach to shape and form. Davey's often used circular motifs and enjoyed finding bold and comical ways to address the viewer. Inspired by Minimalism and Pop art, Davey's work explored issues central to the development of modern sculpture such as gravity, monumentality, and the differences between representational and sculptural form.
He was also fascinated by the idea of relationships, pairs and familia resemblances. During his residency at Queen Mary University of London, his later work was inspired by scientific ideas from string theory, such as T-duality and mirror symmetry, which explore surprising connections and pairings between different forms.
