Coen Vunderink
I try not to use too much of what I know. Instead I try to explore, looking for new phenomenon in my work. Every trace that’s left on every piece of paper tells its own story, but they’re all related to each other.

A fascinating interplay between the material and the image can be found in Coen Vunderink’s (1979, the Netherlands) paintings and sculptural work. The conventional notions of these two fundamental concepts play upon one another’s meaning, shapeshift and reveal themselves to be expressed with such clarity as to suggest great nuance. The work’s playfulness evinces the history of art, street culture, happenstance, the figurative and abstract, the technology of many centuries and how all of this moves through the artist’s hands, to come together in a specific work of art. But nowhere, in all of this, are there any strictly separated contradictions to be found; each and every one is instead a meeting place.
