Christine Borland
‘The Dead Teach The Living’, that’s an inscription that goes back centuries, but it’s been relevant all through history and it continues to be so.
Christine Borland via Language and Intercultural Communication, 2010
Known for consciously shifting between subjects and across borders into fields generally thought of as unrelated to art, Christine Borland’s (1965, UK) artistic practice can nonetheless be considered highly coherent. The many layers of reference and information constituting her body of work interact through an esthetic that reveals both human fragility and the fragility of its conceptions, whether as a life battling entropy, the once living specimen beneath a suite of scientific instruments, or the surgeon, skillfully interpreting a chart. Borland’s work frees us from the constraints of an illusionary opposition.
