Charlotte Dumas

It is my belief that the disappearance of the actual presence of animals as a given in our society greatly affects how we experience life and influences our ability to be empathetic with one another.

Charlotte Dumas (1977, Netherlands) creates intimate portraits of animals. In her work, the relation between human and animal is always indirectly present. Dumas chooses animals close to us, represent roles we deem important. Animals that have been tamed and trained and are used. Every animal is part of the human domain, usually as a captive. Portraying them in a classical style, by and large centered, Dumas captures moments of concentrated stillness. In this regard, the psychology of the portrait plays an important role.
