Martin Fenne

Reality manifests itself as the lapping of waves, a mass of shimmering, moving particles. But also as muscles tensing up, and a state of drowsiness, as if sedated.

Martin Fenne (1964, the Netherlands), originally a painter, uses strips of satin piping to produce his images, following the shape of bodies and objects with an undulating motion, like the lines of a copper engraving. The bands of shiny material partially overlap causing them to hover slightly above the surface, thus catching the light and producing a beautiful luster. We see people sleeping on a mattress, or only just waking up: an ode to the American poet Walt Whitman’s poem, Sleepers.
They have a strong painterly character but also work as bas relief sculptures that take possession of the wall they are placed upon.
