Chantal Joffe
I want to make the painting feel like the person.
Chantal Joffe
The artist Chantal Joffe (1969, United States) creates expressive portraits, often of numerous women and children, on large canvases. She takes her inspiration from photographic sources such as family photographs and magazines, and distorts the images slightly. The smooth brushstrokes with which she portrays the characters are intense. Joffe has a keen eye for a certain discomfort in everyday life, although not devoid of humor. Her paintings reveal appearances constructed with care, in magazines, family photos, but also by ourselves in everyday life, which she calls the ‘choreography of display’.
