Callum Innes
Technique is only a vehicle.
Callum Innes
Although the work of Scottish artist Callum Innes (1962, United Kingdom) is anchored in the abstract tradition, he transgresses that tradition’s austere rules by addressing the procedural and the chance. His paint is brushed onto the canvas before being removed again by the repeated application of layers of turpentine. Innes rinses out the paint, then, or in a matter of speaking, “unpaints” the canvas. By iterating these acts, Innes manipulates the painting in such a way that only the most rudimentary traces of color remain. The effect is an as it were self-generating landscape of stilled movement and endless space.
