Bertjan Pot

Everything in nature is made by simple rules that have been repeated. Most of my products are based on this principle, of taking something small and repeating it. If you were to take a cross-section of any of my objects, you’d find the DNA of that product.

To insist on a sharp distinction between art and design, while questionable at the best of times, is to find oneself falling from position when viewing Bertjan Pot’s (1975, the Netherlands) body of work. In his practice he has managed to consistently question the assumed nature of the shapes, processes and materials we spend our days surrounded by. To call his work analytical, though, would be a misuse of common connotation; Pot’s approach is oftentimes highly intuitive, playful and personally engaged, while inviting our own engagement through the result of his choices.
