BarBara Hanlo

BarBara Hanlo (1957, Netherlands) is a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker whose experimental and poetic works investigate how images are formed through light, time, and material processes. Working both with and without a camera, Hanlo uses techniques such as photograms, long exposures, and chemical alterations of photographic paper to create images in which movement, transparency, and duration remain visible. In her darkroom practice, objects are placed directly onto light-sensitive paper, colors emerge through chemical reactions, and repeated exposures leave layered traces within the image. Rather than capturing a single moment, her photographs record transformation itself. Hanlo’s films share this same attention to rhythm, atmosphere, and observation, often drawing from personal memory and everyday experience. Across her practice, coincidence and experimentation play an important role alongside deliberate artistic decisions. Rather than presenting fixed or definitive images, Hanlo focuses on the processes through which images gradually emerge and take shape.
